Smudging – How To Cleanse Your Space

Smudging

If you’re unfamiliar with smudging, it is a common energy-cleansing technique from the Native American tradition. It is used in many ceremonies, house clearings, and for personal use and well-being. There are many articles and fascinating facts and history of smudging. I, however, fell in love with it for energetic reasons. They use this technique to clear, renew, create and balance the surrounding energy. You are removing all negative energy, ill-intention, and bad vibes from your self or space, centering and balancing existing energies, and healing your highest selves and good. Some individuals use smudging to cleanse themselves or their surroundings daily, and others only when they feel the pull. I find it to be very relaxing and purifying. I can feel the energy shift immediately as I start to clear the space or myself. It is calming, especially after a long or stressful day or situation. Smudging is universal, but for the most part, it is a very sacred and self-journey. These are fundamental techniques for smudging. If you feel that your home or self has a harmful or dark energy attachment, I advise getting someone experienced and knowledgeable to help you clear yourself or your home. A quick google search or recommendation can help you find someone in your area.

Supplies You Need For Smudging Your Space:
Smudge stick (sage) I mainly use white sage. I also love sage with a bit of lavender in it. It depends on what you prefer and what your intention is. White sage is excellent for clearing mirrors and objects as well.
Candle & Matches/ lighter
A fireproof container ( I love using a conch shell)
Sand ( to put your wand out safely)

How To Smudge Your House:
1. Place the candle, the fireproof container, and the smudge stick on a table or flat and safe area. Creating a space of love, protection, and your highest good is best. Find a time when you will not be disturbed; 10-15 min should be enough.
2. Light the candle and say a prayer or intention to clear your home in your highest good and ask for any lingering negative energy to go. I like singing or playing meditation music when I smudge as I believe that it brings a higher vibration of love and light. Light the tip of your smudge stick with a candle flame, then lightly blow the smudge stick, being very careful not to blow embers.
3. Hold the smudge stick over your fire-safe container the entire time to avoid any embers falling onto the floor. You can use a feather if you have one. It is up to you how you see the most explicit energy entering the room. Some hold stones while they do it as well. Again this is all a personal choice. Remind yourself to stay connected to your breathing throughout your smudging session and your intention of clearing the house and asking for all negative energies to leave the house, that they are no longer welcome. You can also state specifics “I only want my family’s spirits and those close to me in this home; all other spirits and energies are not welcomed.” If clearing your space for the first time after purchasing or renting it, you can state, ” Please remove all existing energies and emotions from this home, creating a space of peace, tranquility, and love.” Use your intuition to come up with your intention as well.
4. Go clockwise around your home, starting at the front door ( again, this is an energy choice, if you feel you need to start in another part of the house, this is what will be best for you), and gently wave the wand (carefully) and smudge all corners of the room and where ever else in the house/ space you are guided to. Corners of rooms tend to accumulate stagnant energy. Be sure to open the closet doors and smudge inside (carefully). Do not forget spaces such as the laundry room, the garage, or the basement. I love smudging the front porch or entryway as well. SMUDGE MIRRORS hold much energy. Start from the bottom to the top. The smoke should be white; if it is black, keep going back and forth on that part of the mirror until it turns to white smoke. This also goes for any items you pick up from antique shops etc. Energy is real and can be invasive if it’s not yours or has a lot of negative emotion/ energy connected to it.
5. When you have smudged all areas of your home or space, return to where you started and gently extinguish your smudge stick (dipping it into the sand and applying pressure works well).
6. Close your cleansing ritual with prayer, gratitude, and the intention for the light to come in for safety, love, and your highest good. You can also ask for loved ones, angels, or your religious preference, to watch over and protect your space and home.

How to Smudge Yourself (or Somebody Else):
Once your smudge stick is lit and smoldering, hold it slightly above a fire-safe container, ready to catch any embers that may fall. Carefully wave wand and smoke around your head safely, then around each shoulder and down and in front and back of the body, you can also smudge between the legs and even the bottoms of your feet. Having a friend to help and assist you makes this process easier. Again this is a sacred ritual. I have seen it done in many successful and beautiful ways, starting backward with the feet. It is up to you and where you feel pulled to smudge and clean energy. I do everything with intention. I love asking for all negative energies and attachments to be released and taken away from me. This includes psychic attacks or negative connotations that were directed toward me. This is also a great time to build an energy bubble and spiritually decorate it with beautiful light, intentions, and whatever you need.

** Other items/things you can use to cleanse your home with are Palo Santo, salt lamps, crystals, and stones (Some of my favorites are black obsidian, Smokey quartz, clear quartz, rose quartz, and amethyst you can use your intuition to lay the stones in certain spots in your home, or corners of rooms. You can even make a crystal grid and or set an intention and boundaries for your space (prayer, white light, affirmations); painting walls brings new energy to the home along with moving furniture, decorating etc. (feng shui)

Removing items from home with negative energy or memory attached is also a great way to cleanse your space energetically.
